Drink your way to better skin with these amazing smoothie recipes from Daily Makeover.

“Your skin is a mirror of your internal state, so if you’re healthy and clean on the inside, your skin cells will be more visibly nourished on the outside,” says Dr. Frank Lipman, Integrative & Functional Medicine Physician and founder ofEleven Eleven Wellness Center. Check out three green smoothie recipes, provided by Dr. Lipman and two other of our favorite nutrition experts, that can help get you on track to a brighter, more perfect complexion.

Kale, Mint and Coconut Smoothie
Dr. Lipman likes this smoothie because mint and kale are anti-inflammatory ingredients (inflammation can aggravate skin issues and lead to acne). Kale also increases skin’s elasticity and hydration. Coconut is “rich in antioxidants, which are nutrients that help remove free radicals caused by outside stressors that may damage your skin, such as sun and pollution,” says Dr. Lipman

Recipe:
1 serving protein powder – preferably non dairy (try Dr. Lipman’s Be Well Sustain)
1 cup shredded lacinato kale
1/4 cup fresh mint
Juice of one lime
1 small box coconut water (11 oz)
1 tablespoon chia seeds
4 ice cubes
Directions: Place ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth and creamy.

Rain Forest Açai Smoothie
Kimberly Snyder, celebrity nutritionist and author of The Beauty Detox Foods, swears by this smoothie’s star ingredient. “Açai is loaded with beneficial nutrients and antioxidants, including omega-3 fatty acids, amino acids, minerals, key vitamins and fiber,” Snyder told us. “ The omega-3 fatty acids found in açai maintain the structure and fluidity of cell membranes, facilitating the inflow of nutrients and the outflow of waste products, promoting youthful, smooth and radiant skin by keeping skin cells hydrated and strong.”

Recipe:
2 cups unsweetened almond milk
1 packet frozen açai
½ tablespoon raw cacao (optional)
Stevia to taste
½ avocado (optional to make thicker and more filling)
Directions: Using a good blender, blend the açai and almond milk at low speed until you’ve broken down the açai, then move to a higher speed. Once it is smooth, add the Stevia. Add the avocado to make a more filling snack or dessert. Enjoy!

All Greens Juice
Joanna Vargas, celebrity facialist (she works with Michelle Williams and Naomi Watts) and founder of Joanna Vargas Salon and Skincare Collection loves the recipe below because it “instantly hydrates the skin while encouraging lymphatic drainage, so you are de-puffed and glowing!”

Recipe:
4 celery stalks
1 bunch parsley
2 handfuls spinach
2 carrots
1 apple
1 beet
1/2 handful kale
Lemon and ginger to taste
Directions: Mix in a blender until smooth.

Marie Veronique is one of our favorite skincare companies. They make highly effective and natural products. We love these tips they recently shared perfecting your skincare regimen.

We receive this question quite often, and when you are applying multiple products at one time, it helps to know in what order you should use them. While some parts of your skin care regimen may seem self-explanatory, others are not so obvious. The unchangeable steps of a skincare process are: cleansing is always first, while applying sunscreens and cream or lotion-type moisturizers containing wax is always last.

Oils and Serums

When people are using oils and serums, which is what we recommend, the most confusion seems to arise about which to apply first. Actually, for these two product types there is no right or wrong way to do it. I usually say apply oil first, then serum, because oils are deeply penetrative and carry the ingredients deeply into the skin. However applying serum first followed by oil will have exactly the same effect, so it really is a matter of personal preference. You are going to get the benefits either way.

A note on oil application: sometimes skin is extra dry, due to climate or personal issue or what have you. It is perfectly fine to add an extra layer of oil during the day or at night if you are feeling extra dry. It may be applied before or after serum applications—or both!

Creams and Lotions

While it’s obvious why natural sunscreen is the last item to be applied in the morning, it’s probably less obvious why creams or lotions should be applied at the very end of one’s skin care routine.

Creams and lotions are combinations of wax and water, called emulsions, which have occlusive properties—that is, they hold in moisture. They are also setting up a barricade which prevents nutritive and active ingredients from penetrating into the layers of skin where they are needed. Thus, when using a cream or lotion, the order of application becomes important.

If you want to use a product of this type it should be applied LAST—that is, everything else, including serums, comes first. If you use an oil product as well (which is a good idea), the preferred order would be oil, then serum, then cream or lotion. Never apply a serum on top of a waxy emulsion–most of the beneficial ingredients in the serum will just sit on top of the skin.

Spa Solage is now an exclusive provider of Marie Veronique’s new line of anti-aging, marine-based skincare line. Below are a few of her suggested products. As a proud Marie Veronique provider you can purchase any of the below products by clicking on the link.

Here are ingredients to avoid:

Artificial colors: FD&C or D&C colors – i.e., D&C Red 30 Lake, FD&C Blue 1 – are coal tar derivatives, listed by the EPA as human respiratory toxins. Also can be allergens, skin irritants, and potential carcinogens.

Formaldehyde: Ingredients like diazolidinyl urea, DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, quaternium 15 can release formaldehyde, a known carcinogen that triggers asthma and irritates skin, stomach, liver.

Hydroqinone: A skin-bleaching agent known to cause serious skin irritation, liver cancer, and DNA damage. Banned in many countries.

Nanoparticles: Found in sunscreen, makeup, and moisturizer, nanoparticles increase the absorption of free radicals into the body.

1,4-Dioxane: Considered a probable human carcinogen by the EPA, you won’t find it on the ingredient label because it’s a byproduct of the manufacturing process. Tip: look for (and avoid) ingredients with “eth”—i.e., sodium laureth sulfate, polyethylene glycol (PEG), diethanolamine (DEA), triethanolamine (TEA), disodium laureth sulfosuccinate (DLS), phenoxyethanol, and more.

Parabens: Paraben preservatives (butylparaben, ethylparaben, methylparaben, propylparaben) can mimic estrogen in the body, and have been linked to breast and ovarian cancer.

Petrochemicals: Mineral oil, petrolatum, liquid paraffin, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, butylene glycol, dimethicone, and other petrochemicals can clog pores, cause photosensitivity, strip skin of natural oils, and contain impurities that may be carcinogenic.

Phthalates: These stabilize scents in perfume and skincare, and keep nail polish, hair spray, and shower curtains supple. Linked to hormonal imbalances that lead to infertility and cancer, but companies are not required to list them on the label. Many products with “fragrance” or “parfum” contain phthalates–but not all.

Sulfates: Sodium lauryl-, sodium laureth-, ammonium laureth-, and sodium myreth-sulfate are harsh detergents found in cleansers, shampoos, and toothpaste. Can cause skin and eye irritation, and may contain 1,4-dioxane (see above).

Talc: Talc particles, in powder formulations, are easily inhaled and may lead to tumors in lungs and ovaries.

Toluene: A common ingredient in nail polish, toluene (a.k.a. methylbenzene) is stored in fat tissue and can irritate skin and damage the lungs.

Triclosan: An antibacterial agent in soaps, hand-sanitizers, and workout clothes, triclosan irritates skin, may cause developmental and reproductive problems, and increases immunity to antibiotics.

Here are the good ingredients:

Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C): An antioxidant that minimizes fine lines and hyper pigmentation, vitamin C also protects the skin from free-radical damage. Can be hard to stabilize in water formulations, and, though safe and nontoxic, is often processed with the use of some synthetics.

Beeswax (Cera Alba): Seals in moisture naturally and has antibacterial properties.

Beta Carotene (Vitamin A): Aids in skin-cell renewal, and found in extracts of calendula, sea buckthorn, and carrots.

Cocoa Butter: An excellent moisturizer for dry or ashy skin.

Hyaluronic Acid: A naturally-occurring sugar compound that helps soften skin and combat signs of aging.

Lightening Agents: Licorice extract (glycyrrhizinate), citrus unshui peel extract, Emblica officinalis (Indian gooseberry), and soy proteins are natural alternatives to hydroquinone.

Natural Colors: Annatto, beets, turmeric, alkanet, saffron, carrot and chlorophyll, carmine (derived from beetles), plus minerals like titanium oxide, zinc oxide, iron oxides, and mica.

Essential Oils and Plant Extracts: Plants contain a wide range of therapeutic, healing properties, and provide sources for natural fragrances.

Plant Oils: Absorbent oils like argan, sweet almond, jojoba, coconut, sesame, and sunflower soothe and hydrate dry skin without clogging pores.

Retinol: A vitamin-A derivative that aids in skin-cell renewal.

Squalane: A superb moisturizer, look for squalane derived from olive oil.

Tocopherol: Vitamin E ghts free-radicals.

Shea Butter (Butyrosperum Parkii): A vitamin-rich moisturizer for skin, hair, and cuticles.

Surfactants: Look for castile soap, yucca extract, soap bark extract, as well as coco glucoside, decyl glucoside, or lauryl glucoside – derived from coconut oil, sugar, and corn starch – instead of sulfates.
